Happy Thanksgiving!
It is hard to believe that it is already Thanksgiving. The year is going by too quickly. These last two days have been filled with turkeys and fun. The class made turkey posters using sticker pieces, colored a Pilgrim for a coloring contest, and read our new Thanksgiving story donated to us by Bella in the third grade. Thank you Bella! Today the whole school shared in the Thanksgiving Feast prepared for us by our wonderful St. Pius Parents.

December will be even busier. The children will shop in the Santa Secret Shop for gifts for their families. We will be spending time learning about the Season of Advent and preparing our hearts for Christmas. The first graders will continue working hard to prepare for the Christmas Concert. Hope to see all of our first grade families at the concert!

Happy Halloween!

These were the words ringing out in the first grade today.  We had an awesome day!  The children were so very happy to come to school today in their costumes.  They enjoyed a fun story, gym class, our Halloween party, and parade. Thank you to all the parents who sent in goodies to share and for my parent helpers at the party.

Happy Fall!

Room 23 is always full of activity! The children made Johnny Appleseed characters after we read the legend of his life. The children made posters about the Sacrament of Baptism. We have just completed our study of weather and enjoyed making a cloud! The students are enjoying doing our station work. Each morning I see many look to the station baskets to see what is new. We are anticipating next week and all the excitement that Halloween brings. We will have a Halloween party on Friday, October 29th and will enjoy our annual Halloween parade. We will also be learning about the Feast of All Saints and spend some time learning about the lives of various saints. We continue reading daily and love having stories read to us! The end of the first quarter is coming soon!

September 17, 2010

Our days are always full in first grade. Today the children couldn't believe it was time to go home when I said to get ready. "Already!" many of them said. Each day we add something new to our routine or lessons. They are working very hard to follow directions, put their written work in the correct basket! Tomorrow they will enjoy our first behavior chart award, a popcorn party! Tomorrow the kids will be taking home their first book order forms. Please read the letter regarding ordering procedures. Orders are due on Thursday, September 23rd.

Next week our 8th grade buddies will be helping us make fall scarecrows. The children will have pictures taken on the 22nd.

We had a great start to the new school year! We have 25 kind, fun, and excited students in our room! We enjoyed getting to know each other this week. Many old friends returned as well as 4 new friends. Mrs. Stewart's sixth graders helped us on Thursday put our color word books together. Today we used the Smart Board to introduce our math lesson and visited the library for the first time. The children all checked out a book. The books will be due next Thursday, September 2, 2010. I will let you know what our regular library day will be when our schedule is finalized. Thank you all for helping make our first 3 days a success! I look forward to many more!

Science Day

We started Science Day by making paper airplanes with our friends from Room 22.

We went to the gym to see how far they could fly!

Then we flew them out of the gym!

Next, we used popsicle sticks to build a bridge.

Tomorrow, we will see if our toy car can drive across the bridge from one box to another!

We all received gold medals for our hard work on Science Day!

Snow, snow, and more snow! I think we are all ready for it to be spring! Hopefully March will bring warmer weather and all this snow will go away. March will bring us to National Reading Month. To celebrate reading the children will each read a story to the class. They will all have an assigned day to share a favorite story with their classmates. We will also have a STOP DROP AND READ time on March 2. The children should bring a few favorite story books and a blanket to class this day. March also brings us to one of the children's favorite special days. Thursday, March 11 is Grandparent's/Special Person Day. I hope each child will have a visitor this day. We are planning to have a "present" for our visitors.

Happy Catholic Schools Week!

The children enjoyed being part of the surprise for Mrs. Barbara Perry, our school librarian. The school library was officially dedicated and named in her honor yesterday, February 2, 2010. Mrs. Perry was very surprised to see so many old friends, family members and the entire student body outside the library for her special surprise. Today the children participated in the Catechism Trivia game with the second graders. They sure look silly in all of their miss matched clothes! Tomorrow will be another fun day with crazy hat day.

Next Thursday, February 11 will be our Valentine's Day party. Students may bring a treat to share as well as cards for their classmates.

SNAKE!

After reading our story this week about snakes, Mr. Loewenbruber was kind enough to bring his snake in for us to see. The children loved learning about this corn
snake that eats one mouse every week or two. It was amazing how brave they all were in touching the snake! It was also impressive how many facts they recalled from the story, and how many appropriate questions they had for Mr. Loewengruber!
